Church of Scientology Prevents Sale of Critic's Book in the UK LONDON — 15/11/08 — British bookstores, and the British arm of the online retail site Amazon, have been forced to pull the sale of a new book critical of the Church of Scientology "for legal reasons", according to an email sent by Amazon to customers who have ordered the book. A new exposé by former Irish Scientologist, John Duignan, titled “The Complex: An Insider Exposes the Covert World of the Church of Scientology” (ISBN# 1903582849) has recently been released in Ireland, and garnered much press coverage there and in the UK, including The Sun[1] and The Irish Mail on Sunday[2]. Duignan, who joined Scientology in 1985 and quit in 2006, writes of his experience in Scientology’s elite Sea Organization, and details the conditioning that made him prepared to kill on behalf of the cult that famously claims actor Tom Cruise as one of its members. During Duignan's 21 years in Scientology, he was subjected to harsh indoctrination tactics, paid less than $50 a week for 40 hours of work, and witnessed the 'Rehabilitation Project Force', the Scientology organisation's network of forced-labour detention centres.[3] The Scientology organisation has a lengthy track record of litigation and censorship. Earlier this year, the Scientology organisation threatened to sue online magazine Gawker for posting an embarrassing video of Tom Cruise extolling the virtues of Scientology.[4] In 2006, Tom Cruise prevented the airing of a rerun of the “South Park” episode, “Trapped In The Closet,” which poked fun at the actor and Scientology.[5] Journalist Paulette Cooper was subject to a similar campaign of intimidation. Cooper wrote a critical book, "The Scandal of Scientology", in 1971. Cooper proceeded to face harassment by the Scientology organisation, and was even framed for bomb threats by the organisation itself, through a campaign Scientology called “Operation Freakout."[6] Duignan is reported to be "furious and dismayed" at Scientology's attempts to censor his work, but "not at all surprised given the Church's record on freedom of expression". While “The Complex” remains unpublished in the UK, it may be bought from the bookstore Eason in Ireland.[7] The book's publisher in Ireland, Merlin Publishing, can be contacted through their website[8] or by phone (3531-4535866) References: 1. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/real_life/article1881317.ece 2. http://forums.whyweprotest.net/602259-post1/ 3. http://www.orato.com/current-events/2008/01/29/scientology-039-s-fanatical-military 4. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/28/business/media/28cruise.html 5. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/19/south_park_axed/ 6. http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2007/06/writer-i-was-stalked-by-scientologists.php 7. http://www.eason.ie/look/9781903582848/Complex/John-Duignan |

Scientology's Fanatical Militaryhttp://www.orato.com 2008/01/29
David Miscavige, the seldom-seen leader of the Church of Scientology Cruise’s YouTube wild eyed, fanatical rant, is not a weird misrepresentation of the Scientologist; it is in fact, the ideal strived for by the Scientologist, and particularly the Sea Org Member. By Citizen Correspondent John Duignan I spent a few days with Prof. Stephen Kent, of the Sociology Department of the University of Alberta, a couple of months ago. He is one of the few really brave academics willing to face up to mind control cults of the Scientology ilk, study, and expose what they really are and the damage they do the people they control. I spent many hours with Steve, describing my 20-year experiences within the cult’s fanatical, militant and secretive inner circle, an organization run on paramilitary lines that uses both physical and tortuous mental restraint to control its people. We were discussing the University of Warwick, England lecturer Gordon Melton’s ‘expertise’ - read whitewash, published circa 2001/2002 - on an aspect of the Sea Organization. They run their own prison, or "re-education" camps, which are, in theory, not that different from the Cambodian Khmer Rouge system described graphically in David Putnam’s 1982 film The Killing Fields. The Scientology version is described as the RPF - Rehabilitation Project Force - and one can be assigned to this at the whim of a certain cadre, Hubbard’s personal staff, or by an internal kangaroo court called a Committee of Evidence. I don’t know if you ever read Melton’s piece, but if you did, you will see that it reads like the RPF is a happy 'boy-scouts camping' adventure with a dose of Trappist meditative theory thrown in for good measure. I happened to be around when this whole Melton scam was being put together; I know all the prisoners he interviewed; I know them very well and I know the real conditions they lived under. The two weeks or so running up to Melton's '"free access" interview with the RPF, a select number were moved to another location, while the most "upstat" were all treated like kings, fed, briefed, drilled, given little or no work details and loads of sleep (sleep is normally rationed in this operation, deprivation thereof is part of the program to break the spirit of the prisoner). |

Scientology sauna cure more dangerous than we know ? Does this not defeat the entire purpose of the purification and Narconon detox ? And, these are -the very- reasons Scientology puts people in the sauna FOR 'This letter examines the scientific evidence for common warnings posted in saunas and hot tubs for users of psychotropic medications, alcohol, and illicit drugs. We searched PUBMED using the terms "hot tub," "sauna," "adverse effects," "death," "neuroleptic malignant syndrome," "heat stroke," "antidepressant," "antipsychotic," "lithium," "anxiolytic," "benzodiazepine," "anticholinergic," "cocaine," "alcohol," "amphetamines," and "drugs."' Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About Extreme Heat Source: http://www.bt.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/faq.asp "Can medications increase the risk of heat-related illness?" The risk for heat-related illness and death may increase among people using the following drugs: (1) psychotropics, which affect psychic function, behavior, or experience (e.g. haloperidol or chlorpromazine); (2) medications for Parkinson’s disease, because they can inhibit perspiration; (3) tranquilizers such as phenothiazines, butyrophenones, and thiozanthenes; and (4) diuretic medications or "water pills" that affect fluid balance in the body." Here's oe from the Narconon home state of Oklahoma: Source: http://psy.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/44/3/261 Psychosomatics 44:261-262, June 2003 © 2003 The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine Letter Sauna and Hot Tub Warnings Sirpa A. Tavakoli, M.D., and William R. Yates, M.D., Tulsa, Okla. TO THE EDITOR: Many people are looking for ways to cope with everyday stressors in our contemporary complex and fast-paced Western lifestyle. Saunas and hot tubs seem to alleviate both physical and mental stress and are increasing in popularity. Individuals with health problems and taking certain medications may be at a higher risk for potential ill effects of hyperthermia when using these facilities. Thermoregulation is controlled by the hypothalamus. 1 Normally, thermoregulation is highly efficient, keeping the internal temperature within a narrow range of ±0.5–0.9°C.1 In response to an elevated external temperature, heat is lost by increases in blood flow in the skin, vasodilatation, and sweating. Chronic diseases, certain medications, and poor physical conditioning may impair the body's thermoregulation, leading to a dangerous increase in core temperature. This letter examines the scientific evidence for common warnings posted in saunas and hot tubs for users of psychotropic medications, alcohol, and illicit drugs. We searched PUBMED using the terms "hot tub," "sauna," "adverse effects," "death," "neuroleptic malignant syndrome," "heat stroke," "antidepressant," "antipsychotic," "lithium," "anxiolytic," "benzodiazepine," "anticholinergic," "cocaine," "alcohol," "amphetamines," and "drugs." Our findings suggest that the risks involved in bathing in saunas and hot tubs are controversial, and fatal outcome is rare but does happen. One study of 54 such deaths 2 showed that children are especially vulnerable to accidental drowning; hyperthermia caused the most deaths of individuals of an older age with heart disease or seizure disorder and/or use of alcohol or cocaine. There are numerous cases in the literature of summer heat waves causing strokes and deaths. 3 To our knowledge, there are no reported cases of sauna- or hot-tub-related deaths of patients taking antidepressants, neuroleptics, benzodiazepines, or lithium. Neuroleptic medications, both typical and atypical, are associated with dysfunction of thermoregulation and reduced sweating. 4 Impaired heat tolerance may lead to hyperthermia syndromes, such as heat cramps, heat stroke, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome is an uncommon, potentially fatal complication of neuroleptic treatment that is characterized by hyperthermia, muscular rigidity, and autonomic dysregulation.4 The causes of neuroleptic malignant syndrome are being studied, but ambient heat and dehydration seem to be likely triggers. Schizophrenia patients taking antipsychotic medications may be at a greater risk of hyperthermia syndromes in hot weather, when exercising, or when using a sauna or a hot tub. Finns have used saunas for centuries, and in Finland, psychiatric inpatients are provided with an opportunity for at least one sauna bath per week. 5 A study involving 16 patients in a mental hospital in eastern Finland5 showed that moderate sauna bathing is safe for somatically healthy patients taking neuroleptics. These patients had most likely been exposed to regular sauna baths since early an age. ** Physicians prescribing neuroleptics and other medications that may impair thermoregulation should warn their patients of the potential dangers of exposure to high heat. There is not enough scientific evidence to recommend that physically healthy patients taking psychotropics stay out of saunas and hot tubs, but patients should be encouraged to limit their time in sauna baths and hastily replace lost fluid and salt. Abusers of alcohol and cocaine are at a higher risk for sudden death when bathing in saunas and hot tubs.2 The risks involved when taking other illicit drugs are unclear. ** Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect of hot tub exposure and sauna baths on individuals taking psychotropic medications and/or illicit drugs, especially on individuals unaccustomed to saunas.

Schizophrenia Advocacy · Schizophrenia, Poverty & Crime Source: http://www.schizophrenia.com/sznews/archives/001874.html The Los Angeles Times has a news story on how Criminon International (a Scientology associated group that works in many countries of the world) is providing an "anti-psychiatry" rehabilitation program in one of the California prisons. What is important about this news story from the LA Times is that it suggests that this group is recommending people avoid anti-psychotic medications - the treatment most recommended by experts (and backed up by many well-accepted, independent, peer-reviewed clinical studies demonstrating effectiveness in treating schizophrenia). In other words, the LA Times story suggests that Criminon International is recommending people who have psychiatric diseases abandon their proven medication and treatments, and adopt Criminon's own unproven treatments. If this information is accurate, it is our opinion this it would be a gross violation of ethical and medical standards for the treatment of people who have schizophrenia." (...) - And this does not address placing people currently ON SUCH MEDICATIONS into the sauna, nor the risks ...of which there aren't enough examples, or 'experimentation ?' This is more than 'it doesn't have scientific proof of working. The effects to people on drugs in heat are dangerous to begin with ! |
