Efforts by the Church of Scientology to stop people seeing a video of Hollywood star Tom Cruise talking enthusiastically about his faith seem to have backfired spectacularly.

Scientologists tried to use copyright law to force video-sharing site YouTube to remove the material.

The video has now appeared on a variety of websites - including the BBC, ITN, Hollywood-based Defamer.com and New York-based Gawker.com.

For British-based news websites, use of the video is protected as fair dealing under copyright laws for reporting news and current affairs.

Some reports, including one which appeared on The Times' website on Wednesday, carried links to the video.

But the video was also available on YouTube on Thursday, despite reports that it had been taken down.

Google Video was not showing it directly, but it was available through links to other sites, such as YouTube.

Mark Stephens, a media lawyer at London law firm Finers Stephens Innocent, said: "It really is futile to try and remove the Tom Cruise copyright infringement from the internet. The Scientologists, by taking action to enforce their copyrights, have made it a news story. The mistake was not to foresee that a news story has special protection in copyright law in reporting news and current events."

The affair left Cruise, and the Church of Scientology, facing a barrage of criticism, with at least one US-based website describing the footage as a Scientology indoctrination video, and comments on others describing the star as a "freak".

During the video, which lasts about nine minutes, Cruise, speaking as the Mission Impossible theme plays in the background, says that he and fellow Scientologists are "the authorities of the mind", who are able to "rehabilitate criminals" and "bring peace and unite cultures". He also says: "Being a scientologist, you look at someone, and you know absolutely that you can help them."

Des hackers, des hacktivistes anonymes ont diffusé un "communiqué de presse", en anglais, indiquant qu'il lançait une guerre contre la Scientologie. Une alliance qui souhaite s'attaquer aux finances et aux infrastructures de ce groupe "religieux" fondé par Ron Hubbard.

"Nous voulons protéger le droit à la liberté d'expression, un droit systématiquement violé par l'Église de Scientologie dans sa poursuite à faire taire ses adversaires." indique ces e-manifestants sur Internet.

La scientologie a demandé à notre serveur de retirer la video "Cruise Indoctrination" de notre site !

Pourquoi la scientologie veut-elle cacher ce que Tom Cruise a tellement envie de dire au monde entier ???

Nous ne faisons qu'informer nos concitoyens des dangers nde la scientologie. De plus ce discours de Tom Cruise montre parfaitement ce qu'il advient d'une personne endoctrinée par la secte: une personne hors-réalité et totalement coupée du monde réel.

PS: A ce jour nous n'avons reçu aucun rappel de la part de la scientologie. Visiblement sous la pression des internautes (blogs) et des médias la scientologie semble avoir renoncé à censurer notre site. Après la diffusion d'une vidéo où l'acteur fait un discours devant des membres de la scientologie, l'historien allemand de renom Guido Knopp l'a comparé au ministre nazi de la propagande.

L'historien allemand de renom Guido Knopp a comparé l'acteur et membre de l'église de la scientologie Tom Cruise au ministre nazi de la propagande Joseph Goebbels, dans un article paru dimanche. "Tom Cruise se met en scène comme Goebbels", a dit à la Bild am Sonntag l'expert de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale après avoir visionné une vidéo où la vedette hollywoodienne fait un discours devant des membres de la scientologie.

Dans cette vidéo qui remonte à quatre ans, visible sur l'internet et dont Bild publie des photos, Tom Cruise en costume, chemise et cravate noirs, adossé à un pupitre en marbre et dorures orné du symbole de la scientologie et avec derrière lui une énorme carte du monde, lance : "Should we clean this place up?" ("Devons-nous nettoyer ce monde ?"). Une foule l'accueille avec un "Yes" ("Oui") massif.

"Il est possible que la manière de parler de Cruise soit assez courante dans nombreux “mouvements d'éveil” aux Etats-Unis," mais "par la force des choses, cette scène rappelle pour chaque Allemand qui s'intéresse à l'Histoire le tristement célèbre discours de Goebbels au Palais des sports," souligne Knopp dans le journal. Le 18 février 1943, Goebbels avait hurlé dans le Palais des sports de Berlin : "Voulez-vous la guerre totale ?", approuvé à l'unanimité par une foule en délire.

La récente présence à Berlin de l'acteur hollywoodien Tom Cruise, venu incarner pour un tournage le héros anti-nazi Claus von Stauffenberg, avait fait polémique, en raison de son appartenance notoire à la scientologie.

Depuis plus de dix ans, l'Allemagne est engagée dans un bras de fer avec l'organisation fondée en 1954 par l'auteur de science-fiction américain Ron Hubbard. Très controversée, elle n'est pas reconnue comme une église, contrairement aux Etats-Unis, et est régulièrement accusée d'être une secte dangereuse par des experts et services de renseignements intérieurs internationaux.

Selon une biographie explosive de Tom Cruise venant de paraître aux Etats-Unis, mais non autorisée et dont la plupart des informations ont été démenties par la scientologie, l'acteur serait le numéro deux de l'organisation.

BERLIN (AFP) — L'historien allemand de renom Guido Knopp a comparé l'acteur et membre de l'église de la scientologie Tom Cruise au ministre nazi de la propagande Joseph Goebbels, dans un article paru dimanche.

"Tom Cruise se met en scène comme Goebbels", a dit à Bild am Sonntag l'expert de la Deuxième Guerre mondiale après avoir visionné une vidéo où la vedette hollywoodienne fait un discours devant des membres de la Scientologie.

Dans un communiqué transmis à l'AFP à Paris, l'Eglise de Scientologie réagit en écrivant: "Bild am Sonntag est grossièrement irresponsable pour la publication d'affreuses et honteuses affirmations sur M. Cruise. La seule propagande comparable à la période sombre de l'histoire de l'Allemagne est celle de cette publication allemande".

Dans la vidéo qui remonte à quatre ans, visible sur l'internet et dont Bild publie des photos, Tom Cruise en costume, chemise et cravate noirs, adossé à un pupitre en marbre et dorures orné du symbole de la scientologie et avec derrière lui une énorme carte du monde, lance : "Should we clean this place up?" A German historian has compared TOM CRUISE'S infamous rant about Scientology to a call to war by Nazi propaganda minister JOSEPH GOEBBELS.

GUIDO KNOPP, an expert on Second World War history, told Bild newspaper that Tom's bizarre video address delivered to Scientology members - which surfaced on YouTube last week - 'inevitably' recalled Goebbels.

The Mission Impossible star asks fellow members of the church: "Should we clean this place up?"

Guido said it was bound to remind Germans of Goebbels' notorious speech in Berlin on February 18 1943 when he asked the audience: "Do you want total war?".

The historian added: "It may be the case that Cruise's delivery style is not uncommon in certain religious movements in the US.

"But for Germans with an interest in history, that scene where he asks whether the Scientologists should clean up the world and everyone shouts 'yes' is inevitably reminiscent of Goebbels' notorious speech."

It is not the first time Tom has compared to the vile Nazi.

His portrayal of resistance hero Claus Schenk von Stauffenberg, an aristocrat who led a failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in 1944, in new flick Valkyrie caused unhappiness in Germany.

During filming, the chief spokesman of the country's Protestant Church said: "Cruise has become the Goebbels of Scientology.

"This film will have the same propaganda advantages for Scientology as the 1936 Olympics had for the Nazis."

Scientology is often described in Germany as a sect that exploits its members financially.

In December, regional ministers agreed to investigate the possibility of banning it.

ECCENTRIC Scientologist TOM CRUISE sings his bizarre cult’s praises in another video, which has just emerged.

The star, who is rumoured to be one of the top brass in the unorthodox organisation, seems rather manic during the clip, which appears to be filmed at a church meeting.

Hollywood hot property Cruise even salutes a painting of Scientology’s founder L RON HUBBARD.

Speaking forcefully the star announces: “These are the times now people. These are the times we will all remember.

“I think you know I care so very, very much.

“So what do you say people ? Are we gonna clean this place up? Cos, we’re counting on you.”

Er trägt eine große, blinkende Medaille an einem blau-grünen Band um den Hals. Es ist der „Freiheits-Orden“ der Scientologen-Sekte. Er starrt ins Publikum. Seine Finger sind gespreizt, wirken verkrampft. Er pocht auf ein altarähnliches Pult. Immer wieder, so als wolle er seinen Worten Kraft geben. „Leute, das ist unsere Zeit“, ruft er seinen Anhängern zu, „eine Zeit, an die wir uns alle erinnern werden.“ Er fragt: „Wart ihr dabei? Was habt ihr getan?“ Starrer Blick ins Publikum. Kurze Pause. Ein neuer Satz: „Ich bin sicher, ihr wisst, ich bin da für euch. Ich kümmere mich sehr, sehr, sehr um euch.“

Ein Raunen geht durch die Reihen seiner Zuhörer.

Cruises Augen wandern von rechts nach links. Immer wieder nickt er mit dem Kopf, als wolle er sich selbst zustimmen. Dann der schrille Höhepunkt seiner Rede. „So, was sagt ihr?“, fragt er und es klingt bedrohlich. Jetzt schreit Cruise: „Sollen wir die Welt säubern?“ Die Menge brüllt fanatisch-begeistert zurück: „Jaaa!“

Historiker Professor Dr. Guido Knopp (59), Chef der Redaktion Zeitgeschichte des ZDF, bewertet die Szene so: „Tom Cruise tritt auf wie Goebbels.“ Konkret denkt
er an eine berüchtigte Rede von Hitlers Propagandaminister Joseph Goebbels. Knopp zu BILD am SONNTAG: „Es mag ja sein, dass Cruises Sprechweise bei vielen Erweckungsbewegungen in den USA üblich ist. Doch die Szene, in der er fragt, ob die Scientologen die Welt säubern sollen und alle Ja rufen, erinnert zwangsläufig jeden Deutschen, der sich für Geschichte interessiert, an die berüchtigte Sportpalast-Rede von Goebbels.“

Am 18. Februar 1943 hatte Goebbels im Berliner Sportpalast gebrüllt: „Wollt ihr den totalen Krieg?“ Und die Massen hatten dem Demagogen geantwortet: „Ja!“

Nach dem Satz vom „Säubern“ wendet sich Cruise in dem Video roboterhaft steif dem obersten Führer der Sekte, David Miscavige, zu. „Wir zählen auf dich“, beschwört der Star den Scientology-Chef. Der lächelt. Doch schnell wird es wieder ernst. Cruise nimmt soldatisch-stramme Haltung an, Miscavige applaudiert. Der Schauspieler hebt die rechte Hand und salutiert mit militärischem Gruß vor einem riesigen Foto des 1986 verstorbenen Sektengründers L. Ron Hubbard. Das Publikum tobt, kann sich kaum beruhigen. Der Sektenchef und sein Star fallen sich in die Arme. Abgang Cruise.

Das Video ist vor vier Jahren gedreht worden. Es ist so brisant, dass die Sekte es unter Verschluss gehalten und nur vor Mitgliedern gezeigt hat. Der New Yorker Internetdienst Gawker.com hat das insgesamt eine Stunde lange Band nach eigenen Angaben „von jemandem“ zugespielt bekommen und ins Netz gestellt.

Der erste Teil des Geheimvideos zeigt die Verleihung der „Freiheits-Medaille“ der Scientology-Sekte an ihr weltbekanntes Mitglied Tom Cruise und dessen Rede.

Genauso beklemmend ist auch der zweite Teil – ein neunminütiges, kritikloses Bekenntnis des Superstars für eine vom deutschen Verfassungsschutz seit zehn Jahren überwachte Sekte. Unterlegt ist Cruises Glaubensbekenntnis, das für die Ordensverleihung aufgenommen wurde, mit Musik aus seinem Filmhit „Mission:impossible“.

Mehr als eine Million Mal wurde das Cruise-Video bisher angeklickt und auf anderen Webseiten weiter- verbreitet – trotz massiver Versuche von Scientology, die Veröffentlichung mit Hinweis auf das Urhe- berrecht zu verhindern. Webseiten wie YouTube zogen das Band aus dem Verkehr, Gawker.com ließ sich nicht einschüchtern. In den USA sorgt es seit Tagen für Schlagzeilen. Die „Washington Post“ nennt es „Horror-Film“. Die „Buffalo News“ fragen besorgt: „Ein gefährlicher Mann oder ein fallender Star?“ Der „National Ledger“ (Arizona) stellt fest: „Immer mehr schockierendes Filmmaterial“.

„Es ist ein Privileg, Scientologe zu sein“, schwärmt Cruise im zweiten Teil des Videos in einem Interview mit einem unbekannten, und nicht sichtbaren Fragesteller, „es ist etwas, was du dir verdienen musst“. Cruise sitzt in einem Raum mit schummrigem Licht, während er das Glaubensbekenntnis für die Sekte abgibt.

Ein Scientologe „hat die Fähigkeit, neue Realitäten zu erzeugen und die Verhältnisse zu verbessern“, predigt Cruise. Er habe sich dieser Sache „absolut und kompromisslos verschrieben“. Scientologen seien „die Herrscher über den Geist“, sie könnten „Kriminelle rehabilitieren. Wir sind der Weg ins Glück. Wir können Frieden verbreiten und Kulturen verbinden“.

Der Star, der bis Ende Oktober 2007 bei Dreharbeiten in Deutschland den Hitler-Attentäter Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg gespielt hat, bekennt sich dazu, dass er die Welt verändern möchte: „Ich wünschte mir, die Welt sei anders. Ich könnte in die Ferien fahren.“ Aber er könne das nicht. Er habe „dieses Wissen“. „Und wenn du dieses Wissen hast, musst du etwas tun.“ Scientology, sagt er zum Ende des Interviews, „habe eine Verantwortung zu helfen“. Dann wird Cruise noch einmal ganz deutlich: „Du bist entweder mit dabei oder nicht.“

Scientology wurde 1954 von dem amerikanischen Science-Fiction-Autor Ron Hubbard (1911–1986) gegründet.

Für Professor Knopp stellt sich „die Frage, ob Cruises Stauffenberg-Film, der im Herbst in die Kinos kommen soll, nicht doch in die Scientology-Strategie passt, um über die Person ihres Hauptdarstellers Sympathien für die Sekte zu erzeugen“. Umso mehr, so der TV-Historiker, fühle er sich nun in der Verantwortung, für seinen ZDF-Zweiteiler über den Hitler-Attentäter „die volle historische Wahrheit“ darzustellen.

Wie Knopp fühlt sich auch Pfarrer Thomas Gandow (61), Scientology-Experte der evangelischen Kirche, durch das Cruise-Video an Goebbels erinnert. Gandow: „Für mich ist das ein weiterer Beleg dafür, dass Tom Cruise nicht nur ein einfaches Mitglied der Sekte ist, sondern ihr Propagandaminister. Ich bleibe dabei: Tom Cruise ist der Goebbels der Scientologen. Sein Stauffenberg-Film soll genau die Wirkung für die Scientologen erzielen wie die Olympischen Spiele 1936 für die Nazis, Sympathien für eine totalitäre Bewegung wecken.“

Die Hamburger Sekten-Expertin Ursula Caberta triumphiert: „Dieses Video, das ich seit einigen Tagen kenne, ist für mich ein ganz besonders eindrucksvoller Beleg dafür, dass ich mit meiner Einschätzung richtig liege: Die Scientologen sind eine totalitäre, verfassungsfeindliche Organisation. Tom Cruise hat die Aufgabe, den Türöffner zu spielen.“

Die deutsche Sektion der Sekte war gestern für eine Stellungnahme zum Cruise-Video nicht erreichbar.
