They bravely allowed it to be filmed even though emotional, wanting people to know what really goes on inside.
YupYup: This is YupYup, in Manchester, we are now interviewing the parents of a scientologist who is stuck inside the cult and we would just like to, you know, give them their say seeing as scientology don’t care, who’s disconnection policies are ridiculous YupYup: Could you please tell me how you daughter got into scientology, and maybe a bit about it? Dad: Yeah, Well, about 3 years... 4 years ago... she started talking to Sue, my partner, about her going on courses with her boyfriend at Manchester org, we thought nothing of it, and the next thing she went on the freewinds, for a weeks course, and that cost quite a lot of money, a lot of money. Mom: about £1600 YupYup: £1600 for a week’s course. Mom:: We thought it was a holiday. Dad: Yes, we thought it was a holiday. YupYup: Did she tell you it was a holiday? Dad:: Yes. Mom: Well that’s because it’s going around the Caribbean, and from where she was going, we just presumed she was going on a Caribbean holiday. Dad:: She's a student, she needed a break, she really did. YupYup: So obviously, you're just going to assume there is no ulterior motive behind it. Mom: Yeah, that’s right, yes. Dad: and then, Sue basically saw a change in her tone, didn't you? Mom: Yes, after she came back from the ship she was actually erm... She was doing a year abroad basically, but she had done so long in one country, so she had a few weeks or months in between those and the next placement. So she'd done the ship, came back and essentially had more time to go to the org, she had a lot of free time, and that was really when I saw the change in her. She was going more, she was going to all these meeting that they have at night and these big things where it’s all picked up, and then she did once say about, she’d been to a meeting to do... well not a meeting but a big thing to do with psychiatry. She was telling me about that and I said to her, I said, there are certain things that I do agree with, what they say, and certain things I don’t, and that was really when the changes started, and then she went on her next placement, came back and the one she went, she went on again, which again we thought was just for a holiday. Dad: That was another course, that was... and she left, not gone snooping or anything but I've seen the course, she's actually signed these things, checklists from the course and its eight hours every day for certainly five days or six days, and that course alone, just the course, not the ship, was £800 Mom:: and it was after that one, that we, I saw the big changes, she didn’t come back and tell me about it. Usually she would come in and tell me all about it, chat away. You know, she’d been on holiday for a week, we’d been on holiday for a week, you chat about your experiences. She didn’t tell us very much about it at all, and that again sent warning bells. but of course later, we found out, she hadn’t done anything coz she had been sat in a class room all day and that was why she didn’t look that much more tanned than when she went, when she had been in the Caribbean for 10 days. YupYup: Are you still in contact with your daughter? Dad:: Yes, yes, she is actually here now, she is supposed to be disconnected from scientology if that’s the right word because we’ve talked to her and her boyfriend and we basically said, for the sake of the family will you get out of it, and Sue was nearly going through a nervous breakdown, and respecting her, Becky, our daughter, I don’t mind saying her name, Rebecca Thurston, she’s somewhere about, and her boyfriend David Fryer. and she said she would come out for the sakes of the family, so she did her own letter, I Mom: I'm Sorry Mother breaking into tears, YupYup signals the camera man to shut off the camera. Mom (In tears, outside the view of the camera): it's ok, Carry on, Carry on, I want people to know, I do Dad: She'd written it and sent it off to St. Hill and sent it to Manchester, they hadn’t acknowledged the letter, this was in September 07, and they are now, still sending her information to our house, yes, and we know she’s been to Victoria street in London, to the org there, and that was recently as well, and she spent money in that shop as well. YupYup (Struggling to find the words to say): It’s ridiculous how the scientologists operate. How do you feel losing your daughter? Dad: Its like a death, it really is. A person said to me, in fact it’s her boyfriends father, said to me the other day "Well at least they’re not into drug or on the street." It’s worse than that, it is, it really is, they’re taking their money. They really are, and yes they are doing courses and that, but what I’ve read on the courses, which are all on the internet, we don’t agree with it, and YupYup: Is there anything you’d like to say to your daughter before we finish up the interview: Dad: I want her to leave, finish it completely, but the problem is she can not, because her boyfriend is her, in a way, mentor. If she comes out of it, she would have to separate from her boyfriend; she got engaged to him last year. So she is being pulled by him, he is a smashing lad, I’m not knocking the lad, and the organisation, and she is mentally being pulled by us as well. She’s going in her final year of Nottigham University; we don’t know what to do. YupYup: Alright, thank you very much. |
